A group of armed men on a SUV tried to loot a cash van, which was carrying around 40 lakh rupees, in Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad district on Friday. A security guard was shot dead by the assailants during their unsuccessful bid to rob the van.
Officials of the UP police and Special Task Force have been tasked to nab the gang of armed robbers, who carried out the incident in broad daylight near a toll plaza on NH-28. According to the information provided by the local police, the van was carrying cash worth 40 lakh rupees, which was collected at the Raunahi toll plaza located on NH-28.
The money was being taken to a bank early Friday to deposit it. When the van reached a spot which is around 10 kilometres away from the toll plaza, four or five men, who were riding on a SUV, started firing at it indiscriminately.
The firing caused the van’s windscreen to break. Guard Rajaram, who was in the van at that time, took out his rifle to return fire at the armed robbers but was gunned down by them, officials said.
The sound of gunshots being fired alerted the locals who were close to the area and they rushed to the spot. On seeing the locals approaching nearby, the armed men left the cash in the van and fled away on their SUV.
Inspector General Lucknow Zone A, Satish Ganesh, along with other senior police officials, also visited the spot after he received information about the incident. He directed officials of the UP Police and STF to nab the assailants at the earliest and put them behind bars.
