Two persons including a policeman were reported killed after a bomb exploded at the biggest Eid congregation in Kishoreganj district of Bangladesh, hardly a week after Islamists took hostage foreigners at a Cafe in Dhaka killing 20 foreigners including an Indian girl and a day after a chilling video supposedly by ISIS warning Bangladesh government of more attacks in days to come.
Two of the attackers were killed, district chief Zillur Rahman said. The militants attacked police with “sharp weapons” after the grenades exploded, said another senior district official. Rahman said the attack had been brought under control. Officials said that they were still checking for more miscreants, however, after the incident the prayers were held peacefully and people were requested to go back to their homes.
No organisation as of now claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attack, but the Bangladesh government insisted it was carried out by domestic militants fighting to destabilise Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s secular government and establish Islamic rule in the Muslim-majority nation.
According to TV reports, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while condemning the attack said, “Instead of doing Namaz, what kind of Islam is this?”
Islam says you can’t kill innocent people,” Hasina added. According to local media reports, more police forces were dispatched to Kishoreganj where Eid attackers believed to be holed up. Eid congregation attackers have taken shelter at a nearby school, firing on police, the local media reported.
The Islamic State terror group had on Wednesday issued a new chilling video warning the Bangladesh government of more attacks in the country and across the world until Shariah law is established globally, saying last week’s gruesome attack on a cafe here was just “a glimpse”.
The video believed to be issued in Bangla language from Raqqa, the stronghold of the terror group in strife-torn Syria was first found in an IS-affiliate website and then was also released on YouTube.
