Fearless criminals shot at a constable on patrol duty at Charbagh’s North-Eastern Railway station in the state capital on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. However, showing exemplary courage, despite receiving two bullet injuries — one on leg and other on stomach — constable Afaque succeeded in nabbing one of the two miscreants while the other managed to flee.
According to GRP inspector DK Upadhyaya, Afaque, a resident of Gudamba area, along with sub-inspector Narayan were on night patrol. While they were patrolling the NER station, Afaque spotted two suspicious looking youth near enquiry counter. No sooner than Afaque tried to enquire with them, the two tried to flee away.
The constable also ran after them.
Afraid of being caught, the two whipped out country-made weapons and opened fire on Afaque. Two bullets hit Afaque. Even then Afaque tried to catch hold of the two. He succeeded in nabbing one of the miscreants. In the meantime, on hearing the noise of firing, sub-inspector Narayan also reached the spot. By that time, the other miscreant had managed to flee the spot.
Senior officials rushed to the spot and rushed Afaque to Trauma Centre, where he was stated to be out of danger.
The miscreant nabbed identified himself Rohit, a resident of Faizabad district, the police said. Rohit also revealed the identity of his associate, the police said and added that efforts are on to nab the second miscreant.
