Alambagh police was investigating into a complaint lodged by e-rickshaw owner Alok Kumar, a resident of LDA Colony a few days back, when the police caught the husband and wife duo and the man’s brother. Alok Kumar had told the police that e-rickshaw driver Deepak had booked a couple from Alambagh for Charbagh railway station when his e-rickshaw went missing.
While investigating the case, the police on a tip-off was patrolling at Kunwar Jagdish Crossing after information that some stolen e-rickshaws were about to come there. No sooner than they spotted a man driving a e-rickshaw while a woman with a small child in her lap sitting on it.
Getting suspicious, the police stopped them and asked the man to show the papers of the e-rickshaw. However, he expressed his inability. After thorough interrogation, he confessed that the e-rickshaw was a stolen one and the woman sitting on it was his wife.
In the meantime, a two-wheeler borne man coming from behind tried to flee when the police caught him too on ground of suspicion.
The man driving the e-rickshaw identified himself as Suraj Verma and his wife Savita Verma and brother Raju Verma. On their information, the police recovered six more stolen e-rickshaws, SP (east) Shivram Yadav said. All the accused arrested are native of Ramnagar in Barabanki.
As per their modus operandi, Raju and his sister-in-law Savita used to book a e-rickshaw from Alambagh for Charbagh. After reaching at the station, Raju generally used to complain about stomach ache and Savita used to ask for e-rickshaw driver’s help to pick up luggage from the station. While Raju used to stay behind on the e-rickshaw Savita along with the driver used to go inside. However, in the crowd Savita generally managed to give the driver the slip and mingle in the station crowd.
By the time, the driver used to return, Raju also used to flee with the rickshaw. Suraj who also used to come to Charbagh maintaining an appropriate distance from the e-rickshaw also used to help Raju in fleeing with the rickshaw. Most of e-rickshaw drivers used to assume Savita and Raju as husband and wife and with a kid in their lap, none of the drivers had an inkling about their real intention, the police said.
Interestingly, both Suraj and Savita are graduate and since they wanted to earn fast money, they entered in the crime world.
