A Special Court on Thursday convicted 24 persons and acquitted 36 people in the 2002 Gulbarg Society massacre case, involving the killing of 69 people, including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, during the 2002 post-Godhra riots. The remaining 13 persons have been convicted for rioting and on other charges but not murder. The 24 convicted includes Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Atul Vaidya. All the persons convicted were on bail. Of the 66 accused, six had died during the trial. BJP corporate Bipin Patel, were acquitted by the court today. Patel was from Asarva area where the Gulberg society is located. Former police inspector, KG Erda was also acquitted by the court.
Sentences will be pronounced on June 6.
The Gulberg Society case is one of the nine cases of the 2002 Gujarat riots probed by the Supreme Court appointed SIT.
