Day after residents stone-pelted police after a members of a community were stopped from reciting Ramayan, members of both the community held a meeting in the presence of DM Rajshekhar and SSP Manzil Saini and resolved the tension amicably. Both parties reached a written compromise. Five members each were present from both the sides. It was decided that prior permission of the district administration would be taken before holding any religious congregation.
Religious programmes that were being held in mosque would continue to be held like before, the compromise formula stated. Si
milarly, around 10 to 15 women from Hindu community would continue to tie thread around peepal tree and light lamp in the evening b
etween 6 and 8 pm.
Similarly, on each Tuesday evening between 6 to 9 pm around 10 to 15 persons would recite ‘sundar kand’ as before. However, they would not be allowed to use loudspeakers or mike.
In a late
evening development on Tuesday, tension had gripped the area following police canecharge on protesters at Vineet Khand locality in Gomtinagar after they resorted to violence indulging in stone-pelting on police party and making bid to damage a vehicle as they were denied permission to recite ‘sunder kaand’ at Pragya Park in Lucknow on Tuesday night. The protesters said that they have been reciting Ramayan on Guru Purnima day every year then why they have been denied permission this time.
The stone-pelting incident resulted in minor injuries to CO Mohanlalganj, CO Gomtinagar, SDM and ACM.
According to local residents, tension has been brewing in the area between members of two groups since Sunday over holding of religious programme at the park. While the one group protested against holding the programme, the other maintained that since they have been doing it every year, they shouldn’t be stopped.
The situation turned for worse when residents decided to go ahead with the Ramayan recitation programme despite no permission from the district administrative officials. In no time, the mob turned violent and began pelting stone on the police party.
District Magistrate Rajshekhar, DIG RKS Rathore and SSP Manzil Saini along with other senior officials and heavy police force rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the mob. Unable to do so, the police resorted to cane charge. The nabbed around 7 to 8 persons including a woman.
Situation in the area though is tense but under control. The DM said that those who indulged in violence were outsiders and added that officials would sit with members from both the communities and resolve the issue.
