Congress nominee for Rajya Sabha and leading lawyer Kapil Sibal and UP Congress general secretary and party’s MLC nominee Deepak Singh filed their nomination papers on Monday. Deepak, who hails from Amethi, is believed to be close to both Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader-in-waiting Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Sibal termed nomination filing from UP as his “ghar wapsi”. Elaborating, he said his wife Romila Sibal, who also accompanied the Congress leader, is from Tikauna village of Bahraich. While her education was from Lucknow, Sibal said and added with party nominating him as RS candidate, the party has ensured his “ghar wapsi”.
Congress has 29 MLAs while Sibal needs at least 34 MLAs to sail through as RS member. On support from other parties, Sibal said: “Haath ke saath sabka saath hai (everyone supports the Hand, the party symbol of the Congress party)”. His relationship with the state would strengthen after he wins Rajya Sabha seat, Sibal said.
Until now, Congress, BSP and Samajwadi Party candidates have filed their nomination papers. With May 31 as the last day for filing nomination, only BJP candidates are left to file nomination out of the four players in UP. Scruitiny of nomination papers would be done on June 1 while names can be withdrawn on June 3, Principal Secretary Vidhan Sabha Pradeep Dubey said.
