Surgeon and staffers dismissed after operating on wrong leg of a 24-year-old youth in Delhi

A 24-year-old youth reportedly had his wrong leg operated at a city hospital after injuring his right foot from a fall at his home in Delhi on Tuesday. A complaint has been registered against the hospital.

NDTV reported that Ravi Rai, a resident of Ashok Vihar, fell from the stairs on Sunday, following which he was taken to a super speciality hospital at Shalimar Bagh. Doctors analysed his condition and conducted surgery. Ravi a CA student told the doctors after the surgery that they had operated on the wrong leg, to which the doctors didn’t respond. He then informed his parents, who took up the issue with the hospital authorities. According to the family, the doctors during the surgery also inserted two rods in his left leg, instead of the injured right leg.

The hospital later admitted to the mistake and said, “Patients safety is of paramount importance to us. We are deeply concerned and will take the appropriate action,” in statement released after the incident came to light.

The hospital has terminated the services of the operating surgeon and five other staff members who were present in the operation theatre.
