In a tragic incident, the youth who had immolated self after failing to get an audience from UP’s PWD Minister Shivpal Yadav at a rally in Ghazipur on July 12, died at a hospital in Varanasi on Saturday.
The youth identified as Satyendra Bind was fed up with the PDS shop owner of the locality and wanted reprieve from the UP’s senior minister. However, he failed to get an audience from the minister as security personnel deployed at the rally site foiled his bid to meet the minister.
Enraged over this, he is reported to have gone behind the tent, poured kerosene oil on his body and set himself on fire. However, before anyone could know what happened, the policemen extinguished the fire with the body protector, they wear and rushed him to district hospital from where he was referred to BHU hospital.
SP Ghazipur Raj Kishore said Satyendra had suffered over 40% burn. During initial investigation of police it came to light that he wanted to meet Shivpal to give a complaint letter against a fair price shop owner of his village. Reports stated that Satyendra had given many applications to district supply officer and SDM in the past alleging that the fair price shop owner was black marketeering the stock of food grains allotted to distribute among villagers.
It was alleged that no action was taken against the fair price shop owner on the basis of complaints made to the officials concerned by Satyendra, who also alleged that two months back the fair price shop owner lodged a fake case against him under section 354 (teasing) with Nandganj police, and he was arrested.
Taking serious note of it the IG Varanasi zone SK Bhagat said that Ghazipur police had been directed to investigate the matter properly to know the fact. He said that action against anyone would be decided in this matter after the completion of investigation.
Interestingly, it was only on Friday that the state government has suspended the district supply officer on the complaint of the youth. However, on Saturday, the youth succumbed to his burn injuries.
